Duke's Legends Of Swimming - In Freshwater Rock Pool
The purpose of Duke Kahanamoku’s visit to
Australia in the summer of 1914/15 was specifically to swim. He was invited by
Cecil Healy at the Stockholm Olympic. Cecil who was swimming for Australia in
the 100 metre freestyle final against Duke requested that the final be delayed
as Duke had not turned up on time. They delayed the race and sure enough Duke
won Olympic Gold and Cecil won silver. This was a great act of sportsmanship
and created a strong friendship between Cecil and Duke. In coming to Australia
in the summer of 1914/15. Duke Kahanamoku demonstrated on only his world famous "Kahanamoku crawl", but also variations of breast stroke, back stroke and side stroke as well as the Australian Crawl.
